Trusted advice, informed choices, stronger care

Initial Diagnosis: Facing a Complex Lung Cancer Case

A 50-year-old male member from Georgia was diagnosed with lung cancer, presenting with masses in both lungs. Given the complexity and bilateral involvement, careful assessment and planning were necessary to determine the most effective treatment strategy.

Medical Second Opinion: Expert Review to Refine the Plan

Through our Medical Second Opinion service, a comprehensive review of the member’s medical records was conducted. The MSO recommended a repeat CT scan prior to any surgical intervention to reassess the size and progression of the tumors.

Based on this updated imaging, the MSO advised that the initial surgical treatment focus should be on removing the largest mass located in the right lung.

The preferred surgical method was minimally invasive video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS), which is known to offer a faster recovery and fewer complications compared to traditional open thoracotomy.

Outcome: Choosing Care Close to Home

MediGuide initiated the Medical Treatment Abroad process to explore all viable options for the member’s treatment overseas.

This included a thorough review of several leading international medical centers specializing in video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery, along with obtaining detailed cost estimates for the recommended procedures.

Our team worked closely with the member and his family to provide clear information on the facilities, expected outcomes, logistics, and financial aspects involved in pursuing treatment abroad.

Despite the comprehensive support and the options presented, the member ultimately decided against traveling abroad for treatment.

Prioritizing convenience and proximity to family, he chose to proceed with surgery locally in Georgia. In addition, he opted to receive the lump sum payout offered by his insurance plan, which provided him with financial flexibility during his treatment journey.
